What Are Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated natural extracts derived from plants, capturing their fragrance and beneficial properties. These oils are obtained through processes like distillation (steam or water) or cold pressing. They are called "essential" because they contain the plant's "essence"—its scent, flavor, and chemical properties.

How do Essential Oils Work

Essential oils interact with both the body and mind through their aromatic properties and chemical composition. When their aromas are inhaled, they stimulate the limbic system—a part of the brain responsible for emotions, behavior, memory, and the sense of smell. A variety of Essential Oils provide different benefits, for example, relieving stress, promoting relaxation and improving memory and focus.

Do Essential Oils Work?

Essential oil components can penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB), but this depends on their molecular structure and size. The BBB is a protective layer of tightly joined cells that prevent harmful substances from entering the brain while allowing essential nutrients to pass through. Many essential oil constituents, are small enough to pass through the BBB. For examples, Limonene (found in citrus oils) and Linalool (found in lavender oil). The BBB is highly selective, allowing only fat-soluble (lipophilic) molecules to pass easily. Essential oil components are generally lipophilic, which aids in their penetration. Essential oils' volatile properties allow them to be inhaled and absorbed efficiently into the bloodstream and potentially affect the brain.
