Why is DEET harmful & Lemon Eucalyptus Oil is a Better Alternative

DEET is one of the most widely used chemicals to help prevent mozzie bites! Despite its effectiveness is deterring painful bites, the toxicity of DEET might be causing you more harm then good.

In recent years, a large number of mosquito repellants have been developed with the idea of consumer benefits. While they might keep you free of mozzie bites, there is an increasing concern about the potential toxicity, especially in DEET.

DEET Mosquito Repellant Breakdown

The most commonly used ingredient to repel mosquitos is DEET, or  N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET). DEET is a synthetic insect repellent. It was first developed for military use in the US Army in 1944 (Katz et al., 2008).

Scientists have raised concerns about the use of DEET with studies showing (Clem et al., 1993, Miller, 1982, Briassoulis et al., 2001) that excessive skin application of DEET to large areas of the body over a period of days to weeks, especially in children, has led to:

    • Seizures

    • Bradycardia

    • Nausea

    • Vomiting

    • Bullous eruptions

    • Lethargy

    • Ataxia

    • Encephalopathy

    • Anaphylaxis

Neem Oil, disrupt insect feeding and breeding.

The oil is quite effective in reducing the chance of mosquito bite by almost 70 percent over four hours.
