How to make your house smell like a luxury hotel

Having a home that smells like a luxury hotel is more achievable than you think. We've made a simple guide to help transform your home into a space that smells like you've stepped into a luxury escape.

1.  Clean Slate

Before adding fragrance into the mix you should always start with a clean house. The goal is to eliminate odours that are lingering in your home. These odours will interfere with any fragrance you introduce, so it's important that you take the time to deep clean your space.

2. Airflow

Start by creating cross air-flow in your home. It's not enough to crack open a window. You will need to open windows on opposite sides of the house for just 10–15 minutes each day. Allow your home to air out, shift your couches away from the walls, open closet doors (including kitchen cabinets) and allow your home to breath. You will start noticing an instant shift in the air once a breeze travels through your home.

3. Remove hidden odours

Next you want to remove hidden odours trapped in your home. Common places that odours are trapped could be under the sink, inside trash bins, drains, damp towels, or even the dishwasher filter.

A simple way to neutralise hidden odours is by using baking soda, white vinegar, or a mix of lemon juice and hot water, depending on where the smell is.

4. Wash what doesn't look dirty

You would be surprised by the amount of fabrics in your home that trap odour. Common odour trappers are:

  • Curtains
  • Pillowcases and throws
  • Rugs
  • Dog beds
  • Upholstered stools or benches

Have a regular cleaning schedule to deodorise these items and remove trapped odours.

 5. Select your fragrance

Now that your home is clean and free of odours you can start selecting fragrances. There are a range of fragrance types you could use:

  • Candles
  • Reed Diffusers
  • Essential Oil Diffusers
  • Room Sprays

You might use a combination of these fragrances depending on the space. Here is a breakdown of which fragrances to use where:
