Article: What Does Sandalwood Actually Smell Like?

What Does Sandalwood Actually Smell Like?

In the word of fragrance it's often hard to know exactly what a fragrance note smells like. Picking up a candle, reed diffuser or perfume and seeing the fragrance note sandalwood might make you wonder, what does sandalwood actually smell like?

At DUX Collection, where we craft natural home and body fragrances in our Sydney workshop, sandalwood is one of those notes that quietly transforms a scent from simple to sophisticated. It’s timeless, grounding, and incredibly versatile.

What is Sandalwood?

From the tropical climate of Southeast Asia, the Santalum album tree resides. The rich nutrients and antioxidants from the tree is distilled into an oil from the heartwood (the dense inner core of the tree). The oil is known for its depth and longevity.

Typically essential oils are extracted from flowers or leaves, however, sandalwood comes from the wood itself. It's origin gives it such a rich, creamy, and grounded character.

For centuries the people of Southeast Asia have used sandalwood in spiritual rituals, incense, and traditional perfumery because of its calming and centering qualities.

What does Sandalwood smell like?

Sandalwood smells:

  • Warm

  • Creamy

  • Softly woody

  • Slightly sweet

  • Smooth and velvety

  • Gently earthy

The difference is that sandalwood is not sharp like pine, or dry like cedar wood, and it's not smoky like oud.

Instead, sandalwood feels round and enveloping with an almost milky texture. There’s a subtle sweetness to it, but it’s refined and natural rather than sugary.

Imagine a warm timber warmed by sunlight, or soft skin after a long day at the beach.

That’s sandalwood.

The Texture of Sandalwood

You might not think a fragrance note can have a texture, and you would be right. It's not a texture in a tangible way, rather it is a perceived texture, to help describe how a scent feels in a tactile, emotional, or visual sense

Sandalwood is often described as having a creamy texture that smooths out sharper notes. When blended with citrus, it softens the brightness. When paired with florals, it adds depth. When combined with spices, it prevents them from becoming overwhelming.

This makes sandalwood a good anchoring fragrance and why it's so popular in perfumes and candles.

In fragrance structure, it typically sits in the base note. The base note is often the part that lingers longest on the skin or in the air. Adding sandalwood to the fragrance profile gives it longevity and sophistication.

Is Sandalwood Masculine or Feminine?

Fragrances shouldn't be restricted to masculine or feminine. At DUX Collection we want everyone to feel comfortable exploring and appreciating scents based on their preferences and likes.

Sandalwood is fantastic at enhancing leather, spice, and citrus. It is also excellent at adding warmth beneath rose, jasmine, or vanilla.

The versatility of sandalwood means it compliments a range of fragrance profiles from floral, woody, citrus or fresh.

At DUX Collection, where we design fragrances to feel balanced and wearable, sandalwood is one of those ingredients that bridges both worlds effortlessly. It brings elegance without heaviness and softness without sweetness overload.

Why Sandalwood Feels So Calming

There’s a reason sandalwood has been used in meditation and sacred spaces for centuries.

Its aroma promotes:

  • Calm

  • Grounding

  • Mental clarity

  • Emotional steadiness

The scent naturally slows the breath. Sandalwood is perfect not only in perfume, but also in candles, room sprays, and diffusers designed to create atmosphere.

Sandalwood in Home Fragrance

In soy candles and reed diffusers, sandalwood:

  • Warms minimalist interiors

  • Balances brighter top notes

  • Adds depth to floral or fruity blends

  • Creates a refined, layered scent experience

It pairs beautifully with:

  • Bergamot

  • Fig

  • Rose

  • Amber

  • Vanilla

  • Soft musks

It’s often the note people can’t quite identify — but the one they can’t stop smelling.

Natural Sandalwood vs Synthetic Interpretations

True sandalwood oil is precious and complex. Natural versions are creamy, slightly sweet, and deeply smooth.

Synthetic sandalwood can sometimes lean sharper or flatter. While synthetics have their place in perfumery, there’s something uniquely rounded and nuanced about a well-balanced, natural sandalwood composition.

At DUX Collection, our fragrance philosophy centres on depth, quality, and thoughtful blending. The sandalwood used in DUX Collection products are natural and does not derive from synthetic properties.
