What is Sandalwood?

From the tropical climate of Southeast Asia, the Santalum album tree resides. The rich nutrients and antioxidants from the tree is distilled into an oil from the heartwood (the dense inner core of the tree). The oil is known for its depth and longevity. 

Typically essential oils are extracted from flowers or leaves, however, sandalwood comes from the wood itself. It's origin gives it such a rich, creamy, and grounded character.

For centuries the people of Southeast Asia have used sandalwood in spiritual rituals, incense, and traditional perfumery because of its calming and centering qualities.

What does Sandalwood smell like? 

Sandalwood smells:

• Creamy

• Softly woody

• Slightly sweet

• Smooth and velvety

The difference is that sandalwood is not sharp like pine, or dry like cedar wood, and it's not smoky like oud. 

Instead, sandalwood feels round and enveloping with an almost milky texture. There’s a subtle sweetness to it, but it’s refined and natural rather than sugary.

You might not think a fragrance note can have a texture, and you would be right. It's not a texture in a tangible way, rather it is a perceived texture, to help describe how a scent feels in a tactile, emotional, or visual sense
